Dr. Percey Veer fondly retraces his steps to a place that holds a treasure trove of memories and experiences. Southport, with its sun, rain and wind-kissed promenade and vibrant coast road, was once his playground - a canvas where he honed his skills as a unicyclist and juggler.
Unicycling Adventures
Picture this: Dr. Veer gracefully gliding along the promenade on his diminutive unicycle. For six miles, he weaved through the salty breeze, captivating passers by with his balance and finesse. The rhythmic click of the pedals echoed his determination.
Juggling Feats
But that wasn’t all. Dr. Veer’s juggling prowess was equally mesmerizing. On those flat stretches of the promenade, he’d unleash his seven-ball bounce routines. Each toss and catch was a symphony of precision—a testament to his dedication.
The Big Top Circus
In the mid-1990s, Southport witnessed something truly magical. Dr. Veer transformed the pleasure land complex into a full-size Big Top Circus. The tent stood tall, beckoning families and thrill-seekers. Inside, laughter echoed as Dr. Veer, then known as “Willy Eckerslike,” and his wife, the enchanting “Lena from Lapland,” orchestrated unforgettable summer shows.
Circus Skills Workshops
The mornings buzzed with excitement. School groups flocked to the Circus Skills Workshops. Dr. Veer shared secrets of clowning, juggling, and unicycling. Wide-eyed children discovered their own magic within the sawdust-covered ring.
Star-Studded Connections
Southport was more than just a stage; it was a constellation of connections. During the 1990s, Dr. Veer shared the spotlight with some of the biggest legends:
- Sir Ken Dodd: Their laughter-filled performances left an indelible mark on audiences.
- Robin Williams: In his role as “Willie Eckerslike,” Dr. Veer had the one and only Robin Williams rolling in fits of laughter when he unexpectedly sat in the audience with his family at a matinee performance by Dr. Percey’s Circus company, L & W Circus, Big Top at Southport Pleasure land.
- Roy Hudd: Music hall magic intertwined with Dr. Veer’s antics, creating unforgettable moments.
- Norman Wisdom: As a supporting artist, he added sparkle to the Pavilion Theatre and the Southport Arts Centre.
- Ron Moody: Serving as his Personal Assistant for four days and sharing the stage during several variety shows at the Southport Arts Centre.
A Legacy of Joy
Today, the Circus tent may be gone, but Dr. Percey Veer’s legacy lives on. His journey from a Bolton runaway to clown extraordinaire is etched in the sands of Southport. And as the sun sets over the coast, echoes of laughter still dance in the salty air...
